William Charles Dun was the first child of Charles Clarendon Dun and Marion Harriett Hall. He was a young man of 18 years and 3 months when he enlisted for the Great War on 11 May 1916 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His occupation was a labourer at the time. He stood 5 feet 10 ½ inches (179.1cm) tall and weighed 157 pounds (71.2kg). William was described as having a medium complexion with brown eyes and black hair. He also had a distinctive scar on his left ankle. William noted his religion as Church of England. He was a single man and listed his mother who was living at Tewantin at the time, as his next of kin.
On 21 October 1916, Private William C. Dun of 31 Battalion boarded the HMAT “Boonah” at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to serve his King and country. He disembarked Plymouth, England on 10 January 1917 and marched in to 15 Tng. Bn. (Training Battalion) at Hurdcott for Matrons and accommodation only, as he was placed in isolation. This occurred when soldiers came in contact with someone who had a contagious illness such as mumps, or he may have shown signs of illness and so he was isolated. A week later, with no further issues, William marched out to 8 Tng. Bn. also at Hurdcott. In October 1917, he proceeded overseas to France, where he joined his battalion. On 15 June 1918, William was detached for duty with 16 A.A.S.C. (Aust. Army Service Corps) for a couple of weeks and rejoined his unit on 27 June.
He was granted furlough (leave) in the U.K. (United Kingdom) in November 1918. In March 1919, William was detached for duty with 5 Aust. Div. (Divisional) Boxing Troupe for a couple of weeks. On 23 April, he embarked Havre for England and marched in to 5 Grp. (Group) at Weymouth the following day. William was admitted to 1 A.D.H. (Aust. Dermatological Hospital) at Bulford with V.D. (Venereal Disease) in mid-May and was discharged to 2 Grp. at Sutton Veny on 28 July 1919. On 19 August 1919, William embarked England aboard H.T. “Ajana” for his voyage home. He disembarked Australia on 09 October 1919 and was discharged from the A.I.F. on 25 November 1919. William also served during WW2 from April 1942 to October 1945.
William married Lucy Armitage Salmon on 19 March 1923 in Queensland. Lucy was born on 27 October 1901 at Kempsey, New South Wales. She was the ninth child of Albert Armitage Salmon and Lucy Rudder. Lucy died on 09 April 1981 at Tewantin, Queensland and was buried in the local cemetery with William.
