Edward Richard Dowton was young man of 22 years and 1 month when he enlisted for the Great War on 19 August 1914 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His occupation was labourer at the time. He was described as 6 feet 1 ½ inches (187cm) tall. He weighed 155 pounds (70kg) and had a dark complexion with brown eyes and brown hair. Edward noted his religion as Church of England. He was a single man and listed his father, who was living at 60 Eaglehart Road, Catford, England, at the time, as his next of kin.
On 24 September 1914, Private Edward Richard Dowton of 9 Battalion, boarded the HMAT “Omrah” at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to serve his King and country. Edward was appointed Lance Corporal on 20 December 1915. There is nothing else written in his service records until he was killed in action on 18 May 1915 at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli, Ottoman Empire. He was buried at the Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.
