John GILVEAR was the third of seven sons born to Thomas Gilvear & Christina (Smith) Gilvear. He arrived in Australia with his family, from Scotland, in August 1911. Prior to his enlistment he worked as a labourer on his father's farm.

John also known as "Jack" enlisted in the AIF on the 1 February 1916. He was 21 years old, single, and working as a Labourer (in Bundaberg at this time) and recorded his religion as 'Presbyterian'. He named his father Mr Thomas Gilvear, of Glass House Mountains, as his Next of Kin.

He was posted to 11 Machine Gun Company and embarked with his unit, from Sydney NSW on board HMAT A30 "BORDA" on 5 June 1916. Disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt 12 July 1916. 12/7/16 A.W.L.1 day England fortiture 6 days pay 11/8/16 England A.W.L 1 day - 2 days pay fortiture
