Additional Information:

MITCHELL, ALAN ARCHIBALD
125, Trooper (Private), 5th Australian Light Horse, 1st AIF.
b. 1888 Murrumburrah, NSW.
Enlisted: 21.09.1914 Lismore, NSW.
d. 25.06.1960 Sunshine Coast, Qld.
Next of Kin: Archibald Mitchell – Father.

Allan Mitchell was the son of Archibald Mitchell and Elizabeth Dimmock who lived at Mullimbimby, New South Wales. His brother was Harold Lawson Mitchell.
Mitchell was a farmer of stocky build and dark colouring. He was 26 years old and offered the vague answer of “Protestant” to the question of religion. Possibly thinking he had a strong faith, the army posted him to the Gallipoli Peninsula where a good faith might have helped those caught in a terrifying and seemingly impossible situation.
In September 1915 Mitchell suffered a septic hand. He was treated in Heliopolis, discharged from medical care by October and returned to duty, but the sun, sand and enemy attacks took their toll. By the end of July 1917, he lay dangerously ill at Abassia with otitis media and right mastoiditis. He was treated in the 14th Australian General Hospital and removed from the dangerously ill list by 7 August 1917.
Allan Mitchell was discharged January 1918 as medically unfit and granted a pension of £1 per fortnight.
By 1925 he was living as farmer in the Eumundi district, sharing the property with his brother, Harold Lawson Mitchell, Service No. 2186a, who served with the 5th Light Horse in the Middle East.
Mitchell Hill on Wust Road, Doonan, is said to be named after the Mitchell brothers. Allan Mitchell is noted as a member of Eumundi Fruit Growers Association in 1925/26.
Mitchell moved on to Tamaree via Gympie from 1936 to 1943 then to Wappa Falls Road, Yandina from 1949 to 1958. Farming was his way of life and income. Allan Archibald Mitchell is buried in Yandina Cemetery beside his sister, Ivy Law who died in 1965.
