He was wounded in action in France and was in hospital in England. Gun-shot wound left foot. Invalided to England per HS Panama. Left England 27 Jul 1917. He returned to Australia per A64 Demosthenes(Nursing duties) 24 Sep 1917.

Bernard was the son of Ambrose Blithe & Jennetta Vise who came to Australia from Canada around 1913 where he had been working on farms. His brother Ambrose made over part of his selection at Mons to him where he grew bananas. He sold the 108 acres for 180 pounds, this was just before the Buderim tramway came.
