John was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1893. He enlisted in Rockhampton QLD on 03 02 1914 at the age of 22 years 10 months, at the time he was working as a labourer and living in Yandina. He embarked for overseas on 13.02.1914 and served in Egypt and Gallipoli. On the 8.8.1915 at Gallipoli he received a bayonet wound to his left shoulder and gunshot wounds to his back and left hip. Initially he was treated in Malta but due to the seriousness of his wounds was transferred to Kings Hospital in London where spent 84 days. He returned to Australia and was discharged medically unfit on the 24.05.1916 after serving a total of 1year 171 days. While working as a storeman in Brisbane on the 23.09.1917 he applied to reenlist. Initially he was passed medical fit and given a new service number Q21334. After 2 days the board classed him as medically unfit and he was discharged. He received a service pension at the age of 24 years.
